August 25: Gale Zoe Garnett, Liz Howard and Julie Roorda

It’s good to be back in the Pivot saddle! We’ve got three lovely ladies on the 25th for you. The pears are ripening on the tree on the Press Club patio, summer’s at its fullest, and we’re going to spread the writing-love as thick as the humidity.

Gale Zoë Garnett is the author of the novels Visible Amazement, Transient Dancing and Savage Adoration, and the novella
Room Tone. Her books, essays, poems and stories have been published in Canada, the US, France and Germany. She is ad hoc Writer-in-Residence for Literature for Life, a Toronto-based book-centred organisation for young single mothers who read, write and read to their kids. She also leads workshops in all aspects of public readings for universities, writers’ organisations and
publisher or author requested one-on-one sessions With the support of The Stephen Lewis Foundation and The Writers’ Union
of Canada, Zoë initiated the CanadAfrica Kidlit Booklift, which brought Canadian children’s books to The Nyaka AIDS Orphans’ School in Nyakagyezi, Uganda. She lives in Toronto, Canada and Visby, Sweden.

Liz Howard, a native varietal of northern Ontario, has taken root in Toronto where she engages in cognition research and poetics. She is a member of the Influency Salon editorial group and co-cultivates AvantGarden, a new readings series which foregrounds innovative text and sound based performance by women. Her work has appeared in Misunderstandings Magazine and online at Matrix Magazine as part of the New Feminisms Supplemental. In 2009 she was shortlisted for the LitPop Award for poetry.

Julie Roorda is the author of three volumes of poetry including the newly released Floating Bodies from Guernica Editions.  She has also published a collection of short stories and a novel. Her work has won and been nominated for several awards; she was a runner-up in the NOW Magazine Open Poetry Stage competition at Harbourfront this past spring.
