Pivot’s Finale on June 4th: Angela Hibbs, Aisha Sasha John, Jim Johnstone, and Suzannah Showler

This is it. All good things and whatnot. The 2013-14 Pivot season comes to an end with the last four readers of the year. An all-poetry night. And then we all clean out our lockers and sign each others’ yearbooks and head off to summer camp.

Cast List:

Angela Hibbs is the author of two previous collections of poetry, Passport (DC Books, 2006) and Wanton (Insomniac Press, 2009). She holds a MA creative writing from Concordia University. She is a former co-host of The Pivot Reading Series and is back with her new collection, Sin Eater (ARP Books, 2014).

Aisha Sasha John is a dance improviser and poet. She was born in Montreal, but spent most of her childhood in Vancouver, and currently lives in Toronto. John has a BA in African Studies and Semiotics from the University of Toronto and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. Her first book, The Shining Material, was published by BookThug in 2011. Her newest, also from Boothug, is THOU (2014).

Jim Johnstone is the author of four books of poetry: The Velocity of Escape (2008), Patternicity (2010), Sunday, the locusts (2011) and now Dog Ear (2014). He is the recipient of a CBC Literary Award, The Fiddlehead’s Ralph Gustafson Poetry Prize, and Matrix Magazine’s LitPop Award. Currently he’s the Poetry Editor at Palimpsest Press, and an Associate Editor at Representative Poetry Online.

Pivot on May 21st with Jason Guriel, Chris Hutchinson, Melanie Mah & Shane Neilson

There are two Pivots left before we close down our 2013-14 season for the summer. We have stories, a novel-in-progress, and poetry, but really these four are generalists, not specialists, and if we see bits of non-fiction and memoir thrown in there it won’t surprise me. Almost 100% certain it’ll be patio weather. But as always, no promises and check the sky before you go outside.

Cast List:

Jason Guriel‘s books include The Pigheaded Soul: Essays and Reviews on Poetry and Culture (2013) and Pure Product (2009). His work has been anthologized in The Best Canadian Poetry in English. In 2007, he became the first Canadian to be awarded Poetry’s Frederick Bock Prize. Poetry gave him their Editors Prize for Book Reviewing in 2009. His newest is Satisfying Clicking Sound, from Vehicule Press.

Chris Hutchinson was born in Montreal, grew up in Victoria, and now lives in Houston, Texas. He is the author of four full-length books of poetry and several chapbooks. The newest among them is Jonas in Frames (2014, Goose Lane).

Melanie Mah is a freelance writer in Toronto and a graduate of the University of Guelph MFA in Creative Writing. Her first novel, The Sweetest One, arrives in spring 2015.

Shane Neilson is a writer and a family physician. His previous books include Meniscus, Gunmetal Blue, and Complete Physical, which was short listed for the Trillium Poetry Award. Neilson has published essays and reviews in many Canadian literary magazines and newspapers. He lives in Guelph, Ontario.
